Dr. Raj Palaniappan is a very well-known bariatric (obesity) surgeon from India with 23 years of experience and distinction in performing almost all types of laparoscopic surgeries described in world literature. Dr. Raj has achieved various milestones in his career one of them in the world for SILS surgeries and has designed his ergonomic modification for SILS port placement and designed various traction techniques for the same. He is fondly and rightfully called by his seniors and colleagues as ‘ERGONOMIC MAN OF INDIA”. His interest in technological advancements made him introduce Robotic and Endoluminal bariatric surgeries in India. He has a few of the world's first, Asia's first & so many of India's first laparoscopic procedures under his belt in Gastro & obesity surgery. He won the young achiever award for “Innovation in Medicine” - in Sep 2013. He also received the “Chikitsa Ratan” award from Governor - in May 2007 and was awarded "Surgeon of Excellence: International Excellence Federation", Taiwan - Feb 2014. He invented the “Hiatal Sling” liver traction technique for laparoscopy & Single Incision surgery - in Oct 2009 and the "Rule of Hand" laparoscopic port placement technique in 2011. He is an Honorary Professor at Saveetha Medical University, Chennai and Examiner for Fellowship in IAGES and AMASI, India. He is also the editorial board for the international journal "World Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery" and is the founder and Vice-president of International Association of Robotic Surgeons.
