Kidney Cancer Treatment for Bangladeshi Patients Worldwide

What is Kidney Cancer Treatment?

Kidney cancer treatment means using medicine, surgery, or other methods to remove or control cancer in one or both kidneys.

Doctors may also call this renal cancer treatment. Some patients refer to it as kidney tumour treatment or treatment for kidney growth. All of these terms point to the same thing: the care given to stop harmful cells from spreading in the kidneys.

Some people may think What is a kidney tumour? A kidney tumour is an abnormal growth of cells in the kidney. These can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which usually develops in adults. Only cancerous tumours grow and spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment of kidney tumours depends on the size of the tumour, how much it has spread, and the overall health of the patient.  Surgery is the most common approach, either removing just the tumour (partial nephrectomy) or the entire kidney (radical nephrectomy). In advanced cases, targeted therapy or immunotherapy may be used, while chemotherapy plays a limited role. Treatment aims to remove the cancer or stop it from spreading. Doctors choose the method based on what is safest and most effective for each person.

Why Do People Need Kidney Cancer Treatment?

Kidney cancer treatment is needed when harmful cells grow in the kidneys. These cells can form tumours and may spread to other parts of the body. Early treatment helps stop the cancer and protect kidney function.

Common Causes of Kidney Cancer

The main causes of kidney cancer are:

  • Smoking: Tobacco use can damage kidney cells and increase cancer risk.
  • Obesity: Being overweight can change hormone levels, which may lead to cancer.
  • High Blood Pressure: Also called hypertension, this condition is linked to kidney cancer.
  • Family History: Having close relatives with kidney cancer raises your risk.
  • Long-Term Dialysis: People with kidney failure who need dialysis for many years have a higher chance of developing kidney cancer.
  • Genetic Conditions: Some inherited diseases, like von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, increase the risk.
  • Exposure to Certain Chemicals: Contact with substances like cadmium or asbestos may raise the risk.

Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer does not always cause symptoms in the early stages. Many people find out during a test for another health issue. But as the tumour grows, some clear signs can appear.

Common symptoms:

  • Blood in the urine (can appear pink, red, or dark brown)
  • Pain in the lower back or side, usually on one side
  • A lump or mass in the side or lower back
  • Tiredness or weakness for no clear reason
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever that comes and goes without infection
  • Swelling in the ankles or legs

These symptoms do not always mean cancer. But if they last more than a few days, a doctor may suggest tests to check for kidney problems or a tumour.

If a tumour is found and confirmed as cancer, treatment is usually started to stop it from growing or spreading. The sooner the cancer is found, the better the results after treatment.

To prevent kidney cancer, one should avoid smoking, maintain a healthy weight, drink enough water, control blood pressure and stay active.

When Do These Symptoms Lead to Treatment?

These symptoms lead to treatment after tests confirm that the cause is a kidney tumour or cancer. A doctor may suggest:

  • Urine tests to check for blood or infection
  • Blood tests to see how well the kidneys are working
  • Ultrasound or CT scan to find tumours or growths
  • Biopsy, in some cases, where a small piece of kidney tissue is tested for cancer

If the tests show that there is cancer in the kidney, treatment usually starts quickly. Early treatment gives the best results, especially if the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body. If you or your loved ones have any of these signs, Bangla Health Connect connects you with experts at the leading hospitals around the world.

Success & Outcomes of Kidney Cancer Treatment

Success in kidney cancer treatment means the cancer is removed or controlled, and the patient can return to a normal or near-normal life.

Understanding Success Rates

According to Cancer Research UK

  • Stage 1: Almost 90 in every 100 people (around 90%) survive for 5 years or more after diagnosis.
  • Stage 2: About 75 in every 100 people (around 75%) survive for 5 years or more.
  • Stage 3: Around 75 in every 100 people (around 75%) also survive for 5 years or more.
  • Stage 4: Approximately 15 in every 100 people (around 15%) survive for 5 years or more.

What Does Success Mean?

  • Complete removal of the tumour
  • No return (recurrence) of cancer
  • Good kidney function after treatment
  • Long-term survival without complications

If kidney cancer is found early and treated in time, the success rate is high. In many cases, patients recover fully and live a healthy life with one working kidney.

Approach of Leading Hospitals

Top hospitals emphasise:

  • Accurate diagnosis using CT, MRI, PET-CT, and biopsy for early detection.
  • Robotic and laparoscopic surgery to ensure precision, minimal pain, and faster recovery.
  • Advanced therapies such as targeted drugs and immunotherapy for complex or advanced cases.
  • Multidisciplinary care involving oncologists, urologists, and radiologists working together for the best outcomes.
  • Ongoing follow-up to monitor recovery progress and reduce the risk of recurrence.
